A confusing statement to be sure, but that’s the Cash Money way.
Face tattoos have become one of hip-hop’s calling cards, but for one of the OGs, face tatts are about to become a thing of the past.
In a new interview with Forbes, Cash Money Records co-founder Birdman revealed that he is considering getting his face tattoos removed.
“I just think at this point in my life, I don’t need that,” Birdman said. “That stereotypes you. It takes away from the business and certain things.”
Let’s talk about how fascinating this statement is, when in 2000, Birdman encouraged Chicago rapper Mikkey Halsted, who he was courting at the time, to get face tattoos.
Per our 2015 piece:
“And he was like, ‘You should go get tattoos on your neck,’ and I’m like, ‘Listen, fuck that, I’m not doing shit like that man.’ I can’t even go home and look at my brother and my grandmother in their face if I change. I’m not doing that shit man.”
Is everyone entitled to a change of heart? Sure, but let’s not discount the optics of this statement. We also have to wonder, what “stereotypes” is Birdman talking about, and is he aware that his latest signee, Blueface, has plenty of face tattoos himself?
A confusing statement to be sure, but that’s the Cash Money way.
